Roberson’s cheerleading team has won a second consecutive NCHSAA state championship title. The team came in first in the small varsity tumbling division during their recent competition on Nov. 15 in Raleigh.
The team won their first invitational title in 2012 in a competition hosted by coaches across the state. In 2013, they won both the state title and the coach’s championship.
Senior and team caption Brianna Church has been a part of all four championship teams, and feels that winning the titles was due to the hard work of the athletes.
“It’s very unusual for a team to win so many titles in a row, and the fact that we have makes me proud. Every time we go out on the floor, we don’t know what the final outcome will be. You may hit it perfectly, but then you might not, so when you do it’s really exciting,” Church said.
The varsity competition team consists of 12 cheerleaders that are carefully selected by their coach Bree Hodge, depending on their mastery of select tumbling and stunting skills. Hodge has coached the varsity team since 2011, and feels that a team’s success is based not only on talent but on the dedication and hard work that is demonstrated throughout the season.
“I was so excited to be able to coach the team. They worked so hard to build such a strong program that we can be proud of, and I’m hopeful that we will be able to continue that into the future,” Hodge said.
The team will lose eight seniors at the end of this year, changing the team dynamic.
Sophomore Shaina Wynne feels that this will be hard, but that they will be able to come back as strong as ever.
“It’s going to be difficult since they are such a big part of the team. We will have to work hard to compensate, but I think we can definitely do it,” Wynne said.
Junior Chad Kovacs, a first year member on the team, feels that the feelings of a close-knit family is what makes
the team special.
“I couldn’t be more proud of my team, my team is the best thing about me,” Kovacs said.
